Nutrition
A well-balanced diet and good nutritional habits are key to a healthy life. Poor nutrition and a lack of physical activity leading to obesity account for approximately one-third of all cancer deaths. As a result, managing weight and eating well is important to reducing the risk of developing cancer.
Some things to consider:
- Eat well to establish a healthy weight and avoid becoming overweight or obese
- Eat smaller portions to reduce the number of calories
- Eliminate high-calorie foods, such as sweets and fatty foods
- Replace unhealthy food with more servings of fruits and vegetables
- Exercise to burn calories
- Moderate physical activity a few days a week will help to keep a healthy weight
- Drink less alcohol
- Limit drinking to 1 or 2 drinks per day, at most
Some steps one can take toward a better diet are:
- Eat at restaurants less often for more control over what and how you eat
- Cheat a little bit to satisfy cravings
- Plan ahead—create personalized menus and shop with purpose
- Choose natural food and ingredients rather those heavily processed
- Only eat when hungry and eat slowly, so you can feel when you’re full
