Nausea and Vomiting

What Causes Nausea and Vomiting?

Nausea or vomiting may be caused by radiation or chemotherapy treatments for cancer. About 80% of patients treated for cancer experience nausea and vomiting. Although not life-threatening , nausea and vomiting are worrisome side effects that can cause dehydration and choking. It is important to address these side effects quickly to avoid interruption of cancer treatment or a loss of the ability to care for oneself.

What You Can Do for Nausea and Vomiting

  • Speak to your doctor about possible treatments and medications
  • Eat bland foods, such as dry toast and crackers
  • Slowly drink clear liquids, such as cold ginger ale, apple juice, and tea
  • Decrease bad smells and tastes by sucking on hard candy like lemon drops or mints
  • Rest for at least one hour after each meal and take slow deep breaths

When You Should Contact Your Doctor:

  • If you are vomiting more than three times an hour for three or more hours
  • If you are unable to take your medications
  • If your vomit contains blood or any substance that looks like coffee grounds
  • If you feel weak or dizzy
  • If you cannot drink more than four cups of liquid in a day, or are unable to eat for more than two days

Make sure to consult your healthcare professional before making any changes to your diet.
